A Faith That Gets Its Hands Dirty
✦ Introduction
There are moments in Scripture that define everything, and two of them happen in the same night.
At a table, Jesus Christ breaks bread and lifts a cup.
Then He gets up… wraps a towel around His waist… and kneels to wash dirty feet.
One moment reveals His sacrifice.
The other reveals His heart.
Together, they show us what real faith looks like.
“Don’t just come to the table—be changed at it.”
✦ The Table: Where We Remember
Communion is more than a ritual. it’s a confrontation with grace.
The bread represents a broken body.
The cup represents blood poured out.
Jesus knew exactly what was coming…and He still gave Himself freely.
What the Table Teaches Us:
Grace is costly
Forgiveness is real
Love holds nothing back
Communion calls us to remember.
“He was broken for people who would fail Him—and He loved them anyway.”
✦ The Towel: Where We Respond
But Jesus didn’t stay at the table.
He got up.
He took a towel.
He filled a basin.
He washed feet no one else wanted to touch.
This is where faith becomes real.
What the Towel Teaches Us:
Leadership looks like serving
Strength looks like humility
Love shows up in the mess
Foot washing calls us to move.
“Anybody can take communion. Not everybody will pick up the towel.”
✦ When Faith Becomes Real
Here’s the tension:
If we receive communion…but refuse to serve—we’ve missed the point.
The table says: You’ve been forgiven.
The towel says: Now go live like it.
Faith was never meant to stay comfortable.
It was meant to step into real life—messy, raw, and human.
✦ Faith That Gets Its Hands Dirty
People aren’t looking for more words.
They’re looking for something real.
Someone who will:
sit with them in pain
stand with them in the struggle
kneel with them in the dirt
That’s what Jesus Christ did.
And that’s what He calls us to do.
“Real faith doesn’t end at communion—it begins when you pick up the towel.”
✦ Closing Prayer
Lord,
Thank You for the table. for Your sacrifice, Your mercy, Your grace.
But don’t let us stop there.
Humble us.
Break what needs breaking in us.
Teach us to live what we receive.
Give us the courage to serve, the strength to kneel, and the heart to love people where they are.
Make our faith real, not just in words, but in action.
Let us not only remember You…but reflect You.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
